Week Recap

Attendenance

  • Nelson, Gavin, Cameron, Nicole, Eldo, Ben Li

Bank Account

  • Gavin set it up
  • Also set up PayPal Account

P.O. Box

  • We need someone to be in Gainsville

Wendsday Conference Call

  • There was going to be talk of organizational strucutre, but instead we moved more towards the idea of a mission

Nelson's To Do List

  • Andrea Rota - Goldsmiths College, University of London: Basically the only UK group ready to go
  • It might be premature to have a call with them, but it might also be beneficial to help them out
  • Asked Creative Commons for some help, also asked for PK to help out fiscally, make them our fiscal agent
  • PK is willing to be our fiscal agent, btu they just dont want to do any work to do it, it is in our hands
  • We need a fiscal agent in order to accept grants (through them)
    • We need to sign a contract and get it notarlized, and then we should be done (it looks like)
  • Florida Lawyer
    • Give him a week and a half, then call him

Counsel

  • What terms has Matt really "signed on for" what further communication have we had with him?
  • Suggested that we contact a cyberlaw clinic in terms of what? let's talk about this --elizabeth
    • Clinic doesn't exist during the summer some of them do. again, which issues are we looking to discuss?

Mission of FreeCulture.org

Organizational Structure

  • Organizational Structure should take a backseat, we need to see it within our mission

Campus Groups

  • How do these groups relate?
    • Obviously student oriented
  • How close do we want the groups to be?
  • Should the mission be set for student groups?

Idea of FC.org

  • FC.org was providing a roadmap for the campus groups
  • Nelson - "Priming the pump...trying to get groups started"

Questions

  • What is the purpose of FC.org?
    • Outreach
    • Provide campus groups with resources
    • Community organizing
  • Big theme?
    • Participatory Culture
  • Campus Chapters
    • There is a certain ideology out there of Free Culture, and FC.org and the campus groups embrace and perpetuate this ideology
    • Promote awareness
  • Three things that are noncontroversial that bring us together
    • Resource
    • Outreach
    • Network
  • To what extent should FreeCulture.org do activism or lobbying?
    • People should be involved in each descision making process, from the campus groups
      • Does that need to go into the bylaws?
    • If we want to be a 501(c)3, you have to go at it two ways
      • For up to $500,000 expenditures anually, 20% of that can be lobbying
        • If you go over that, then you get in trouble from the IRS
      • Lots of the big lobbyits are split up into various different companies
    • PK does a lot of lobbying, and they are just a 501(c)3, and then get away with it through lots of certain aspects
    • We can never support a particular canidate, but we can do "reportcards" on certain canidates
  • ACTIVISM
    • How should, if at all, should FC.org run activism?
    • Central FC.org makes activist decisions, core team
    • Central FC.org would take stances on national and international issues
  • What about local and state wide issues?
    • Should FC.org send out alerts, or should it be up to the local chapter?
    • Create a good action alert system, that includes where people live

For Next Week

  • Helping FreeCulture students find internship opportunities and jobs w/ in FreeCulture.org
    • Job placement has to be open to everyone, not only to our own members ( becasue of 501(c)3 )
    • As long as it is not exclusive it should be fine
  • Supporting or conducting our own research
  • Would it be appropriate for FreeCulture.org to make sort of spin off groups? Groups that don't fall under our umbrella
  • We could start awareness for stuff like, extensions for firefox
  • Do we want to start other projects to start other awareness? Or just point people towards other resources?
