Minutes for a Sunday conference call on January 30, 2005 by Andy Scudder

Free Culture Tour

  • The tour will take place daily from March 10 through April 15, and then on weekends afterwards.
  • The performance will be 45 minute-1 hour performance that's topical, entertaining, and to the point
  • Booking other performance groups / speakers are the responsibility of the hosting group
    • Good to have a list of speakers, performers, etc. that could be booked for the events that day
    • FreeCulture.org should help each other find artists to help out
  • Press release from Colin available by the end of next week
    • Internally, we need talking points/ways to pitch the tour to get buy-ins from the other organizations on campus, see Colin's Why Bring Tour to Campus pdf.

Concerns about the actual performance

  • Updates on the performance
    • A template of activities surrounding the performance will be appearing on the e-mail list, website or wiki...
      • People/resources to contact
    • Overall Structure
      1. Live spoken word/music sampling remix
      2. General introduction/context
      3. "Idioteque", "Durham Cops" - examples of free speech/political applications of remixing
      4. Followed by Remix Future, with a remix of CC license piece mixed with music, etc.
        • Samples with local voices/pictures
      5. "More Than Two Sides" song about FC.org issues
      6. "Language of My Reality" spoken word with images
      7. End with leading people to FC.org, DHB, etc.
  • Main concerns: not topical enough, slightly too political, not participatory
    • Incorporating a loop machine to demonstrate live sampling
    • Idioteque, Durham Cops will be contextualized so the politicalness is de-emphasized, lead by a more apolitical piece using sampling and spoken word, etc. and then followed up with a more general introduction
  • How will someone with no background on these issues react to it?
    • Comes form the perspective of someone who doesn't know much about these issues
      • People should leave interested and excited with the desire to learn more
        • We don't need a salesman for our cause, but we don't want people to walk away with nothing to do
          • Colin will distribute pamphlets, Free Culture video

Summer Tour?

  • Idea: to take it to more commercial venues, get more broad exposure
  • Problems: Colin not as available, money/financial support
  • We should first find out how to book all of the artists/speakers, etc.
    • We need time to work out the logistics
  • Overall, a school-/college-centric tour is more appropriate and within our scope
    • This tour is more of a way for us to get experience with organizing performances, etc. and may help lead to future tours in the coming semesters
      • Look into piggybacking on other tours

Video project

  • Recap:
    • 30-45 second video explaining what local campuses do, what makes their campus group unique, to demonstrate the
      • 5-10 minutes of source material to be cut down to the essential bits
  • We have someone who has access to post production tools (who?)
  • Could re-use other footage for other purposes in the future, for individual orgs to introduce themselves

Eyes on the Screen

  • link
  • Try to find a copy locally to show
    • We have a member who can digitize a tape for us...
  • Distributor said they would go after unauthorized distribution
    • EMI still isn't giving them rights to use to some footage even with proper funding
  • Our use should be educational in the sense of being part of a discussion on civil rights/liberties and our history
  • This is the tip of the iceberg: this is one well-known, important documentary that has been hit with financial issues
    • There are many examples of other documentaries that didn't make it because of the prohibitive cost of the problems

IPAC

  • Guest Blogging - Post updates to their blog when we start campaigns and have updates on issues
    • Ben Li will work with them on this
