Another exciting Sunday Conference call... July 24, 2005.

Agenda

Week In Review

  • Anything happened? Please add.
    • I wrote Copyright primer (was July 2005 edition of manifesto). However, it doesn't seem to be a manifesto as much as a treatise at this point: not earnest enough. Stephen Compall 18:57, 24 Jul 2005 (EDT)
    • Downloaded the Free-Culture book & audio and conversion, came up with some links for inclusion with cd, put suggestions on my user page User:poningru

Activist Packet

  • Updates
    • FAQ
    • Manifesto
      • Nelson and I will have to talk sometime about the points from July 2005 edition to be included in here, and also about the voice and tense desired. However, I am not interested in satisfying certain ideologues posting on discuss at the moment, nor in arguing technical precision in a document meant to persuade, as I've already been far too technical in the aforementioned document. If you'd like to write down anything about this, feel free to use Free Culture Manifesto/August 2005 edition as a scratchpad. Stephen Compall 18:57, 24 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Activist Packet

  • Manifesto/Primer
    • It could use to cover some issues outside of copyright - trademarks, patents, etc. and how technology is enabling people to use culture in ways that conflict with the law
    • What about people who don't have access to technology?
      • This is an issue that does affect our movement, but it is something that is not our area of expertise.
        • However, without greater access to technology, we wouldn't have this movement.
      • Should we address this problem in the manifesto at all?
    • The purpose of this manifesto/primer is to convince the lay person of the importance and need for our movement
      • Currently it assumes no knowledge of copyright, but understands somewhat the need of innovation to build on previous innovation.
  • Data CD
    • Audiobook downloaded and converted to Ogg-FLAC to include an open format
    • Links to free and open source software to use and other literature
  • FAQ
    • Continues to progress
  • Mission Statement
    • Currently blank, Nelson will keep working on it.
  • Organizing Manual
    • Any other volunteers?

Lessig's Blog

  • For those posting to the blog, we highly reccomend at least one person to peer review your post for style and any other issues
  • Please comment on our posts on Lessig's blog.
    • We should also respond to people's questions and issues that may come up in the comments
  • Issues/Projects we should pursue
    • Ourmedia, Archive.org: we should make students active participants in producing open culture and make it available to students locally
    • Open Access
      • Open access for student government
    • If a chapter is starting an interesting, local project, we should get other chapters to get involved
      • We should promote people to create works that support Free Culture ideas, e.g. an exhibition of important artwork hosted on Ourmedia.org that will keep artwork available
      • Online streaming radio, podcasts, or real radio with CC-licensed or illegal art type music that raises awareness of Free Culture

Defcon

Fred and Elizabeth are finishing up their presentation and will send it to the list once it's completed

  • Elizabeth will also talk to people about Free Culture at the EFF Fundraiser
