U.S.: Petition for Public Access to Publicly Funded Research
March 14th, 2007 by Gavin BakerFreeCulture.org is a lead sponsor of the new Petition for Public Access to Publicly Funded Research in the United States, along with the Alliance for Taxpayer Access and several library and consumer groups. The petition specifically calls for the reintroduction and passage of the Federal Research Public Access Act in the 110th Congress.

Do you mean free public access? or just public access? Remember publically funded research is not necessarily FULLY funded by the public. A lot of what keeps the research going is the revenue generated from selling the papers. If the papers reveal how the knowledge was obtained without witholding anything major they are “Free as in speech” even if they are not “Free as in beer.” But yes, in general I agree that the public should be able to view the information and that any price charged for it is purely for the sake of advancing the institution.
