If such an idea of Open University was initiated in my country i would surely be part of it and for sure i wold promote it to the others. So far all open projects that are on the web have been very successful, I am very confident that this will work for universities too.

Well said, @Karen and @Jan-Christoph. Many of these big information-warehousing companies lack a sense of respect for the actual human experience and the intimacy of each person's information. People might argue using facebook to check on your friends means you care about them, and not stalking, but seeing as how you put it, the ones who *really* care will go the extra step, unless they are lazy.

Free, open-source alternatives are always better because they usually allow the users to be in control of their information and privacy instead of walling it off from the rest of the world without consent.

Once RDF and RDFa become more wide-spread most of the "data-silo" companies such as Facebook will likely loose many of their visitors or fall apart as the newer versions of web-services decentralize and become more user-friendly.

Also, there was an article recently mentioning how the European Union wants to declare a law giving people the 'right to be forgotten.' Many companies will hold on to your information; even after we leave them, and this is currently without our say in the matter.

My mistake, I phrased it above as though the music was what you missed. The original lyrics to GMTA are what I meant to point towards. GMTA/HBTY are an independent or derivative creation and fall, as you stated, under a separate copyright claim. but the initial song is two copyrights, lyrics to HBTY is a copyright, and the derivative melding of those two would be another copyright. I apologize for my misspeech. This was a very interesting post and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for posting!

You're missing an important copyright in your initial three layers. The music is a separate creation from the lyrics, and would be filed as a separate copyright claim.

Especially for free culture it is much more healthy to »be around« people that have similar interests. People on Facebook, Twitter etc. generally care less about free culture, privacy, open infrastructures and all that great stuff.

That means using Identi.ca instead of Twitter even though it is »ugly«, Diaspora instead of Facebook even though it is buggy, OpenStreetMap instead of Google Maps even though it does not have reviews, SparkleShare instead of Dropbox even though it is in beta, …

But the free projects have their advantages; to mention only two: you can view your Identi.ca stream without logging in (useful for internet cafés etc.) and OpenStreetMap has an awesome cycle map!

And it is this fuzzy feeling that I get when I am using free projects, particularly when I contributed to them and know that if there is something wrong, I can fix it.

It really all boils down to:
»when you don't create things, you become defined by your tastes rather than ability. your tastes only narrow & exclude people. so create.«
– _why the lucky stiff, http://favstar.fm/users/_why/status/881768089

So, let’s educate others about free alternatives. :)

The problem is that Facebook has made us lazy - I found out a friend's divorce via Facebook.

It used to be that if there were acquaintances/friends of friends that we wanted to stay in touch with, we needed to actively try and stay in touch. Now, you just look at your news feed to see if they've been up to anything, you don't actually talk to them. It's almost like... stalking. You find out news from the equivalent of the grape vine - but it someone's important enough that you want to know about their life, they should be important enough to actually talk to in order to find out.

I took a break from facebook because I ended up single and I just didn't want to deal with FB (and him) anymore - and it turned into my English independent study (essaying about my facebook free semester) and I'm honestly wondering why I should bother going back. I'm actually less stressed and no longer feel the need to sit and facebook and see what people are up to.

Facebook is a false sense of intimacy, hope and community. I've chosen to replace it with a real sense of intimacy, hope and community. That, and I no longer spend hours on Farmville.

People are not robots and they make mistakes. They learn from these mistakes, but facebook does not care about this; neither do the employers, all they see is a person "designed for mediocrity." Narrow-mindedness, is probably the most respectful word to describe it. Our culture is obsessed with categorizing people and making assumptions based on statistics.
What does it matter what people do socially, so long as they are not endangering anyone and contributing back to their society? Plenty of people drink beer; it does not make them psychopaths or terrible people; unfortunately, Mr. Melvin thinks this is a deal-breaker. If we absolutely must compare a person to a fine-tuned machine, I would like to point out how even people "designed for greatness" choose to act strangely, such as writing their sentences in unintelligible structures without any punctuation...because they are perfect.

That is a good presentation, keep up the good work.

What concerns me very much is that there is very little coordination across the globe in tackling the very real issue of grossly unfair copyright laws. Unfortunately, most counties are signatories to the 1886 Berne Copyright Convention and a much more coordinated approach is needed if ever this treaty were to be changed for the better. I've little idea how the problem can be approached in any really effective way.

I do my bit by posting the arguments on popular computer (IT) sites such as 'The Register' but these posts lose position after a day so the hits become insignificant very quickly. Moreover, such posts have to be full of hyperbole or no one will read them. What's needed is not hyperbole a good resource site where all the solid facts and arguments about unfair copyright laws can be collated and evaluated.

If anyone is interested in why I consider copyright law is unfair then you'll find them here (remember, these are user feedback posts to news articles so they won't make much sense w/o the main article (but they're available by backtracking).

Freeculture.org held a drm video contest earlier this year and announced the winners of this contest today. All videos had to be uploaded to a public video site to make sure they would spread pretty fast around the global community. I decided to post all videos from youtube right away here at deny but you could also visit freeculture to see them at their website or bookmark their site. (do it)

I did like the article really much, was really informative and the best part was that only the required part was elaborated, to the point concise information always helps and keeps readers running around digging for the information’s will never require a reread. I really wish spammers read these articles and check how easy it is to be human and respect knowledge.

I almost bought the original version but I kept thinking a new version would be out around the first of the year. As soon as I saw the Kindle 2 was available I ordered it. I think $359 is a lot but after using the Kindle for a few weeks it's worth the money. I was surprised at a lot of the classics that are available for either free or a couple of bucks. I finished Treasure Island which I hadn't read since I was a boy and am currently reading Voyage to the Center of the Earth with 3 or 4 more books all loaded up and ready to go. In fact I'm reading several at the same time. This is a great product for anyone that loves to read, I haven't tried any news papers or magazines yet.
As for the unit it's really nice, a little heavier than I thought so I end up reading with the Kindle on a pillow when in bed and on the table when I read at the table. It gets a little heavy after 30 minutes or so if you are holding it. I really like all of the controls and features, I've gone back to read the users manual several times. I've also used the dictionary quite a bit, really works slick. I tried the audio feature and decided it was too robotic for me. It just isn't human but it certainly works very well if you want to use it. I guess I was looking for the fond memory of my grandmother reading the Wind in the Willows to me many years ago.
In summary all I can say is get one. If you really like to read you're going to love it.

Always great to see such contest, that let people say what they really think, what they would like to see on the plate in the future. Always hungry for more quality content, sometime great ideas like this can show the world how much we care. The glass isn't always half empty!

After reading http://freeculture.org/blog/2008/01/14/victories-for-open-access/, I thought this might be a useful resource for your site:

http://www.biomedsearch.com

The site is free, and perhaps the most comprehensive biomedical site on the web. It has all PubMed and MedLine documents, plus mililons more including full-text journal articles and a large database of theses and dissertations.

And, you don't have to register but if you do you can use portfolios to save documents, share documents (and comment on them) between users, and set up automatic alerts.

I'm a bit late, but you seem to misunderstand how libraries go about acquiring the rights to materials.

Libraries still need to pay for materials in their collections. There isn't an absence of scarcity as you suggest in this posting, digitalization has actually increased the scarcity of a very important thing called money. Establishing the rights to digitally provide access to materials that aren't open works is extremely costly, and those costs are rising as publishers link more digital works into packages so that you can't buy individual works or databases.

I understand your concern of the invasion of privacy resulting from DRM technology venders impose, but you are misinterpreting the way this market works. Your proposal serves only to weaken the position of the library. Libraries don't hold as much financial buying power over publishers as you seem to believe they hold. Because libraries don't increase publishers sales in any direct way, no profitable organization is going to be concerned about the embargo of an entity that is designed to provide free access to the materials they are attempting to profit from.

Hey y'all, we posted your call to action on Shareable Magazine here: http://bit.ly/A6u6X. I think it's cool that you're working to increase access to the knowledge generated by universities. For one thing, that's a huge gift to those who can't make it to college. How shareable of you!

I wonder if you realise that that Open University is one of the most respected brand names in the UK? It is one the country's largest and best known universities (I'm a graduate), a leading producer of television documentaries, and a big contributor to Open Learning.
<a href="http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/" rel="nofollow">http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/</a>
It's really confusing personally and for search engine use, to see the brand used by another Creative Commons organisation.

Besides the desperate need of a name change before this gets going (as it's already established in the UK and elsewhere) as already mentioned, there is another distinction I would make.

Where IT is being used for the business of an institution there is often no choice - sorry, not practical affordable or existing choice except to use proprietry software. Many of the business management systems used in HE only exist in HE, have a very small market, and lack the general community which is vital for OSS to be practical. So, while an institution could initiate writing their own OSS solutions, unless many of them contributed, it would rapidly become unsustainable.

I would extend that to software used for the business of the institution further too and include infrastructure, office products etc too - while OSS alternatives do exist, the skills to implement, support, and maintain tend to attract much higher salaries as they are less common in the Market place, thus making proprietry choices the only pragmatic ones for most institutions.

However, this does not need to affect the teaching and learning activities or research conducted....although, often research relies on proprietry equipment and software too simply because that's the only source available in some niche fields.

Then there the openess of the Internet - which I hope wouldn't include expectations to compromise security and resiliance in the drive for 'open' access? Clearly, one persons 'openess' is smothers opportunity to exploit...so systems need to be designed to protect themselves and the users, while also leaving things as open as practically possible. I just hope it's realised just how un-'open' to some uses things have to be though.

So, while this is an admirable aspiration and any compromises need to be justified when institutions take them, I'm not actually sure how practical it would be to get very close. We shall see I suppose.

(type on phone so not spel chekd etc)

Thanks for your work on this very important topic. I've been doing some thinking of my own about building universities around the cultural practices of free and open source software. If you're interested in the work my colleagues and I at Cognitive Policy Works are doing, check out this conference call where our staff discussed an open source model for building curricula:

Two problems with this:

firstly, the government is (should be?) controlled by the population as a right, whereas Google is controlled by its shareholders as a pay-to-play;

secondly, Google only exists because government passed laws that allow corporations to exist, so any data that Google gets is data that government automatically gets if it wants anyway. If Google really upsets a goverment, it can just change the law to kill it.

Google & Company (the libraries that supply Google with in-copyright works stole my book in 2008, in fact Google's accomplice was the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My book is a genealogy / family history work. I was researcher, writer, typesetter, and graphics person, in short I put a lot of my time and energy into seeing just 200 copies of <i>"Fevens, a family history"</i>, printed. This is why I got upset on May 13, 2009

ON NOT PUTTING THE GOLD OA-PAYMENT CART BEFORE THE GREE OA-PROVISION HORSE
Full posting: http://openaccess.eprints.org/index.php?/archives/630-guid.html

SUMMARY: Universities need to commit to mandating Green OA self-archiving before committing to spend their scarce available funds to pay for Gold OA publishing. Most of the university's potential funds to pay Gold OA publishing fees are currently committed to paying their annual journal subscription fees, which are thereby covering the costs of publication already. Pre-emptively committing to pay Gold OA publication fees over and above paying subscription fees will only provide OA for a small fraction of a university's total research article output; Green OA mandates will provide OA for all of it. Journal subscriptions cannot be cancelled unless the journals' contents are otherwise accessible to a university's users. In addition, the very same scarcity of funds that makes pre-emptive Gold OA payment for journal articles today premature and ineffectual also makes Gold OA payment for monographs unaffordable, because the university funds already committed to journal subscriptions today are making even the purchase of a single print copy of incoming monographs for the library prohibitive, let alone making Gold OA publication fees for outgoing monographs affordable. Universal Green OA mandates will make the final peer-reviewed drafts of all journal articles freely accessible to all would-be users online, thereby not only providing universal OA, but opening the doors to an eventual transition to universal Gold OA if and when universities then go on to cancel subscriptions, releasing those committed funds to pay the publishing costs of Gold OA.

Concert-goers are encouraged to submit screenshots and machinima that “best capture the spirit of CC and the event.” Images and links should be placed on the wiki – Check it out for further details

I like the plan for the future, but I would just add that it would be nice if SFC could create some slick new resources for chapters to use in advertising SFC (e.g. posters, fliers, hi-res images).

I also hope that SFC would be interesting in integrating into the OER movement.

Well, I remember in the old days, when we like a song in tv or the radio, we simply record the whole thing on blank tapes on the tape recorder. In the Philippines back then, nobody got arrested for doing that. Now with the rise of the mp3 player and free mp3 sites, people here get to appreciate music more. With all that jazz about downloading it just shows that people in the music industry don't care about culture anymore, they just want money.
