Personal Remark by Jay Sulzberger:
The next few months in New York City will see a large battle for
the Internet. The New York City Council and Mayoral Broadband
Advisory Committee, headed by Gale Brewer,
http://www.nycbroadband.blogspot.com
is in process of drawing up rules and regulations and contracts
which will, in large measure, help or hurt our freedom to
collaborate and communicate using our Net. The Broadband
Advisory Committee is composed of hard working men and women.
But today some committee members do not yet know what the Net is.
I believe that the government of New York City should, before
writing laws and contracts, know what is at stake. The Telephone
Company and the Cable Company are spending hundreds of millions
of dollars on real lobbyists and false advertising. We who know
what the Net is, must work to keep our Net free, and to keep our
packets flowing fast, flowing without third party interference.
In the next few months, we have a chance to speak directly, in
public, to the NYC Broadband Advisory Committee. If we fail in
New York, winning the war will take longer. Let us act now. One
place to begin is to join the Internet Society of New York:
